I'm Old

The other day, I'm watching a youtuber give their review on the Disney Movie Strange World and one of their biggest complaints is that they feel the environmental message of the movie is undercut by the family drama.

They feel the message would get through better if there was a clear cut villain that wanted to destroy the environment for their selfish greed and the heroes to unite and fight against.

I thought this was an odd take since people often complained of all the environmental movies and tv shows that did just that. Ferngully, Captain Planet, etc. I can remember people just groaning and rolling their eyes at how many times this happened and what a breath of fresh air it was when they had a complex villain that wasn't 100 percent and that it's more complicated that just stopping the evil badguy at the end of the day. Hence, why I liked that aspect of Strange World. It's not in your face like the movies and shows I had to grow up with.

Then I realized, this youtuber likely was born after the 90s, when this onslaught was going on, and they didn't witness scenarios over and over again in their media.

I know feel very old.

I mean if these people want something black and white there's plenty of options for them out there.

And the message must be clear enough for them to comment on it so it sounds like you don't even need to use too much critical thinking to grasp the underlying message here.

Oh dear. I feel like every new decade there's another group that pops up about what the past disney stuff was top tier and anything new doesn't achieve the same thing. While I get having a villain for villain's sake has its place, it doesn't mean that's the only approach to making one. Variety is the spice of life~
