I've been meaning to make a post about this, I got an idea for an RPG to do sometime after I saw Night at the Museum: Battle at the Smithsonian.

For those who haven't seen the Night at the Museum movie, here's the main point that I'm thinking. Due to an ancient Egyptian artifacts at night all the museum's exhibits comes to life. So you have, Teddy Roosevelt, dinosaurs, tiny cowboys and Roman soldiers and any other statue come to life. (In the sequel you have Amelia Earhart and General Custard come to life, which is fun.)

So, this got me thinking that you could probably make an RPG out of this. If you have a museum setting, then you can either play as a nightwatchman or as any possible character that you can think of that might come to life. Example: There's a caveman exhibit so you can play as a caveman, or maybe a Lewis Carrol exhibit was set up so you can play as Lewis Carrol, or William Shakespeare etc.

I'm not quite sure what the plot would be, but I can just picture a fun RPG out of this.

I would play that! I would!!!!!

Since I don't really have time to reboot the secondworld, this could be a good thing to play for a while!!!

There has to be a dinosaur.

Oh, oh! you could have the central characters from the permanent exhibit and they would have to deal with the characters from the traveling exhibits when they come to life. For example, right now at the museum of civiliosations next to my hosue, there is an exhibit about fantastic creatures. You actually have a dragon, a manticore and a unicorn on display. Imagine the ruckus!

He he! I thought you might be interested. ^_~

I'm just not sure if the style should be a story style like secondworld was or if it should have more of a traditional RPG system.

Yes! That could work, and they have to battle each night without destroying the museum because if the museum is gone (or if they're not back in the museum) by sunrise, then the characters disintegrate. That's what happened in the movie.

Oh! Stu just mentioned a great idea. Have an exhibit in which it shows the different stages of Hitler's life (including when he was at art school). We could have the characters fighting six Hitlers. XD

I, young Hitler, shall attack thee with a PAINTBRUSH!

(Is not surprised at ALL that Isa took to this)

I can't think of any good ideas for that sort of scenario... Well, except for some kind of suspense/horror type of game. For some reason when I read this, it reminded me of a zombie game a friend wants to base at the Seattle IKEA since you're stuck in a giant building and can only use what's inside to survive.

I wish I had better input to add. It sounds like an interesting idea, but it's just not inspiring me. XP (It is, however, making me think on a game I've been wanting to run with the local friends that hasn't panned out. I'm now debating if I should just make it an online thing..)

That seems kind of wrong to me. I'm never for whitewashing history, but making light of someone who caused so much hate and death that we still deal with today just makes me feel ill to my stomach.

Did you ever see Night at the Museum? Seeing the actual movie might give you some ideas. It doesn't exactly have a deep plot, but it is a fun movie rental for an evening. Let me put it this way, in the sequel we have Al Capone, Napoleon and Ivan the terrible teaming up to conquer the museum.

I'm already toying with the idea of playing as Calamity Jane. XD

Meh. I think it's alright because it's not really hitler that is mocked in this idea. It's his image and the historical attachement people put to him. But the joke of having a villain at various stages of his life can work with any villain really.

Historically Speaking, Hitler wasn't even that bad. He was awful of course, and he killed a lot of people, but we have more recent (And well hidden) massacres that propose even more horrible results (like the african genocide). Yet everybody focuses on Hitler, mainly because he was turned in a super villain by the american media (As soon as the americans walk into a conflict, they have to make someone into a supervillain...) It's a weird thing.

An adventure game in an Ikea would be hilarious.

Hitler was terrible, yes.

But I did an essay for History once, and came to the following conclusion:

Stalin was that much worse.

We don't have to do the Hitler idea. We can just fight Nazi soldiers or if that still makes people too uncomfortable, we don't have to use this particular idea. They're are other ideas/historical figures we can use. I'm really just brainstorming ideas at the moment.

I'm also toying with the idea of playing as Calamity Jane, or maybe Sherlock Holmes. XD

That's why I don't like the idea; who are we to say Adolf Hitler was always "bad"? He had to have been a decent person at some point in his life... What he decided to do with his life and countless others is very unfortunate. I'm happier letting it be, personally. Plus, whenever he comes up I can't help but feel bad anyway since who was it he exploited to pursue his vision? Germany. I've a lot of my family from Germany, and because of one man (who was Austrian) Germany is also demonized along with him. It's like a personal blow.

Dude. I call Calamity Jane. She was one of my childhood heroes! *shotgun!*

It does suck for the german. Again though, I find people exagerated and accused a whole country. I mean, jeez, they were just doing what their governement told them to do. Kinda like the americans with the black slaves. Everybody had one, because everybody had one! And everybody hated jews for the simple reason that everybody else was doing it. When you put things in context, hating a race, a gender or a country is contextual and evil people can rise from any country at all.

I agree with Johanne that we don't have to use hitler if it makes people unconfortable. It's just ideas - they are mutable.

Alright! I surrender! ^_~ I can not get in the way of someone's childhood hero! XD (I was still toying with the idea anyway).

(By any chance did you ever see the animated series of Calamity Jane?)

We can always have pirates! They're fun or maybe vikings. There's a lot we can do. ^_~

Vinkings are fun. Nothing like pillaging to start a day. They could pillage the museum, unknowing that this will cause them to fade...

this sounds like a fabulous idea! that movie was fun <3
i'd like to join but I really have no clue about the mechanics of playing an RPG
i'll just throw out some ideas for you guys to chew on: Julius Caesar, Genghis Khan, Terra Cotta army, Dodo bird (and then a sloth, a mammoth, and a sabertooth tiger), Blackbeard the Pirate

Thanks. Right now, I'm just brain storming about the different ways of doing an RPG. One way we might do it is like a round robin. Each person writes an entry about what their character is doing and then leaves option for the next person turn. Or we might do it a different way, I'm still thinking for now

I will definitely keep those ideas in mind. ^_~
