Day #26: Saddest death



I know there are more "classic" deaths, but I picked Ray because I don't understand why so many people were shocked or surprised by his death? It's not the first time a Disney character has died and considering he was the only person, besides Mama Oldie, that was holding his own against the shadows, it's not surprising the Dr. Facilier killed him.

Anyway, I love Ray who was also voice by Jim Cummings the well known voice actor who did a lot our our favorite characters growing up. (Darkwing Duck, Zummi Gummi, Winnie the pooh, Tiger, etc). Ray was just the little ever hopeful bug the movie needed and I was happy he got to be with his Evangeline in the end and also proved that Timon was right all along.

Timon: They're fireflies, stuck up in that big blueish black thing.

I know I was shocked by his death because it was so sudden. I remember both seeing it in the theatre and with roommates and hearing everyone's reaction - myself included - when Dr. Facillier stuns him then lifts his foot and let's it hover over Ray. Horrible, awful... Many people have squished insects in such a way, but Ray was just so likable! I'm still amazed at how quickly I came to adore a character I thought I'd find annoying.

I almost chose Ray, too. His death really is sad!

Ray is just likable, he's a friend everyone wishes they had. Also, really, he was kind of the mentor in the group since he was giving advice to both Naveen and Tiana about love.

His funeral is probably one of the more touching funerals animated I think. (I like to think that if Tiana and Naveen have a son, they'll name him Ray. ^_^)

I can only second Diane; I didn't see Ray's death coming at all. I categorized him into the "cute secondary supporting character" role along with alligator (I forgot his name, gah), and those characters are usually around mostly for fun, not for this...
But one thing this movie really deserves credit for is going against your cliches and expectations. :)

Ray's death didn't shock me too much, but it was very sad and an awesome Noble Sacrifice.

The alligator's name is Louis (but don't feel bad, I had a brain fart moment and had to look it up myself.)

The movie does go against cliches, such as how Naveen is the one that is always getting captured and he's the plot device instead of the female character.

Also, I love what lycorne just pointed out to me.

This was my reaction, too. Usually "cute sidekick" characters are safe. Typically you've got to be the love interest or a close relation to a main character to be killed off as a good guy (exclusing villains and villains turned good guys) in a film like this!

Plus, I admit, at first Ray was really annoying to me. There was a little "somebody squash that bug!" thought running around in my mind at first when he was introduced. Then later, it happens? Aghh! I didn't mean it!
