eastofthemoonDay 09 - The most believable relationship?
Amira and Karluk from The Young Bride story also known as Otoyomegatari. For those who don't know this manga series, it's the latest series being done by Mori Karou (the creator of Emma). Here's the brief summary of it from anime news network:
Set along the Silk Road that connected Asia with the Mediterranean world, including North Africa and Europe in the 19th century. The story of Amira, a woman skilled in archery and horsemanship, sent to marry Karluk, a boy from another village who is 8 years younger than her. But all is not well, as her village decides to take her back...
In this story Karluk is 12, so you're all probably thinking, why on earth would I pick this couple as most believable? First of all, for the culture and time period, it's not uncommon for a person to be married at 12 and actually what odd is how Amira is 20 and not married yet. (In fact, this could part of the plot later, but I'm getting off topic.)
Also, Karou handles this relationship in a very tasteful and realistic manner. I adore the interaction between them, as they try to be close but you can tell there are times Karluk isn't sure what to do but he tries to be a good husband. And before you ask, there are no sex scenes or things of that manner happening in this story. In fact, when Amira and Karluk are asked if they "made a baby yet" they both blush like mad. It will probably be awhile before they get to that level.
Anyway, Otoyomegatari is suppose to be released in North America by Yen Press soon, if you see the manga, go buy it, especially if you liked Emma. It has a great cast of characters and a very sweet story to go with it.
