I've never had a problem with my PS2, nor has Jo ever had a problem with hers. Maybe it was just him? I haven't regretted getting mine - it has a few solid games, including Kingdom Hearts 1/2, Tales of Legendia/the Abyss, Okami...
Other M - I've heard praise for the story, I've heard condemnation of the story. I've seen a few of the in-game cutscenes, and can't say I'm entirely fond of them. I'm more concerned about the gameplay, to be honest.
I can't say that I got the same enjoyment the time I tried it out. Fixed cameras can work in 2-d, but I didn't like Other M's camera for the 3-d environments. The ability to look around for secrets would have been nice. Platformers are all well and good, but I didn't like how it was handled there. And the shooting was worse.
As for Metroid games - I've played a bit of Metroid, all of Zero Mission, Super Metroid several times, and Metroid Fusion. And Prime 3: Corruption most recently, though I'm still working on that one.
To be honest, the opening cutscene of Other M didn't do the Mother Brain fight justice in my opinion - but hey, maybe that's just me. In any event, what I saw of it didn't justify the sixty dollars it would have cost me.
