Slayers novels thought and other stuff
Feb. 8th, 2008 10:27 amI realize this is a little late, but...better sooner than later.
I read both Slayers vol. 7 and 8 and they were awesome. They are so worth reading and they give you a better insight about the anime.
First you all, you really see more of Xellos evil/manipulative side in the novels than the anime. He really got Lina good into getting her to think it was Gavv and Rashatt that destroyed the city. Not only that, but it gives another good reason why's it unlikely that a Xellos/anyone pairing would ever happen. I doubt Amelia or Lina would want to go out with him after that incident.
One thing that did surprise me though; the sword of light being one of Darkstar's weapons. I had known that in the novels Gourry loses the sword of light, but I didn't realize it actually was a weapon of Darkstar. I had thought they had made the "five weapons of Darkstar" bit just for Slayers Try. It makes me curious if those weapons appeared in the "Lost Universe" novels.
Plus, I would have to say the Gaav is my favorite Slayers villians. It's too bad he doesn't get appear in the novels again because he was an interesting character.
Also, a little mistake I notice the anime made. In the novels Amelia mentions that only Lina can cast Raywing, yet, I recently rewatched the first episode of Slayers Try. While the gang is on the ship Amelia says around the lines. "Are you sure? We can still Raywing back to shore". Not a big deal, but it just a blooper to add to the blooper reel for the anime.
One thing I loved about the novels was that we got to see more use of Amelia's priestess abilities. Comes in rather handy when sensing and avoiding ambuses by mazoku. Needless to say, I'm going to keep that tibit of information for whenever I write future Slayers fanfics.
Also, one of my favorite scenes:
"Amelia!" I called. "When did you wake up?! Are you okay?"
Amelia scoffed. Hmph! A blast like that is nothing to a heart fueled by justice!
Maybe she'd forgotten the whole almost dying part.
"But more importantly, Lina!" Amelia pointed again at Gaav. "Who is that guy?"
If people could spontaneously explode, all of us would have right then.
XD I wish they kept that scene for the anime especially the "I thought he would be bigger bit" at the end.
Also, even thought they did more hinting of Zelgadis/Amelia in the anime, you can still detect the Z/Aness in the novels. I like how when Lina was revealing what was going on Zel said that he couldn't speak for Gourry, but he and Amelia might want to leave (which just hinted at more of the L/Gness as well). Then there was the fact that he and Amelia entered Phiblizo's temple together.
There was one detail I wish they had kept for the anime. The whole everyone had eaten a piece of Phiblizo's bit. I always thought it was odd in the anime when Phiblizo started killing everyone with those little balls. I realize he's suppose to be a powerful Mazoku lord, but it just felt like he was seriously cheating and he was too powerful for this character role. However, the novel cleared that part up for me. If he was able to kill everyone because they had a piece of him in them, that made way more sense.
Finally, the part when you get to read the LoN thoughts when she's attacking Phiblizo was interesting. One thing I love about novels is that you can hear the character's inner thoughts more and get a better insight of their personality then you can in an anime.
In conclusion, the novels were good and I REALLY hope they continue to translate the rest.
Besides reading the novels, I've also been slowly working on my Slayers TRY AU and I've started to sew my Tear costume together. I've cut out all the piece now it's just a matter of sewing. It's the first time I'm sewing a costume for myself, so it should boost my sewing level a bit.
And a funny chat happened with one of my co-workers.
I've also been watching Pumpkin Scissors thanks to
gullwhacker and I'm really enjoying. It has a nice mixture of a serious plot and humour. Also,
ichiban_victory you may want to see a couple of episodes yourself, because one of the main characters, Alice Marvin, is a combination of Amelia and Victora. (She has Amelia's love of justice and Vic's leadership and swordsmanship skills.)
