FANFICTION WRITERS MEME

How about a brief introduction for yourself?

Joanne aka “Eartstar” I’ve been writing fanfics since I was about...16.

Fabulous! And what got you into fanfiction to begin with?

My first memory of fanfics was back when I was getting in the internet fandom side of cartoons and I kept seeing the term “fanfic” coming up. I was about 14 at the time and not having much knowledge on such things I asked my brother, who had been an anime fan for a few years by then. He explained it to me and then I started reading. A little I started to think, I could probably write my own stories and it grew from there.

I see, so what kind of fanfiction do you like to write?

Oh, just about anything really. My favorite things to write is humour, but I also enjoy writing character pieces, adventure, drama, etc all the good parts of writing.

Do you find writing easy? Hard? What are the most difficult aspects of writing you struggle with?

Sometimes it’s easy, sometimes it’s not. I think the hardest thing for me is getting myself to sit down and actually write. It’s way too easy to get caught up in life and not update a fic for months on end. It is more easy to write when I have feel the creative juices flowing and my fingers are just itching to write my new idea down.

Write a few sentences or so of your favorite pairing or character.

“Mister Zelgadis, I got you some ice cream!”

The chimera blinked dumbly held out two ice cream cones. He accepted the one offered to him. “Thank you Amelia, what flavor is it?”

“Chocolate mint chip for me and I got your favorite.”

“...Amelia I never told you my favorite flavor.”

The princess licked her cone. “You didn’t, but I could all ready guess. It’s not that difficult to figure out.”

Zelgadis raised an eyebrow. “I’m called a ‘dark mysterious swordsman, I doubt I’m that easy of a person to read...”

“It’s coffee flavored, right?”

Zelgadis trailed off. Without a word, he grumbled a ‘thank you’ and began to eat his cone. So much for being mysterious.

Are there any fanfiction cliche's or trends you're sick of or just can't stand?

Mary/Gary-sue, bashing fics and author insert fics. Mind you, I can read an author insert fic if the writer is just writing for a joke and it’s well written, otherwise no.

Are you guilty of any fanfiction cliche's you hate? Or any other ones?

Back in my early fanfic days (about 16) I did start writing an author insert fic about Slayers with a friend of mine. However, it never got posted on the internet thankfully (it didn’t make it pass from just being written down on paper) @_@

What was the first fandom you wrote for, and do you still like/participate in it?

Mummies Alive, and I did make an original character, but I tried hard not to make her into a Mary-sue. However, those fanfics weren’t not very good and I have burned them since then. No evidence! XD

I’ve lost interested in Mummies Alive years ago. I haven’t read or thought of writing a fanfic for that series for years. The first series I ever wrote a serious fics for was Slayers and yes, I still write for that series. ^_~

Name your OTPs or most frequently written pairings/characters and explain what it is about them that you love to write.

Zelgadis/Amelia- I like how they have contrasting personalities. Zelgadis colder personality makes it fun to force him into romantic/funny situations with Amelia and then I get to write his reaction to it.

Kazuma/Ayano- Ayano is just a fun character to tease and there are so many different scenarios to put her in with Kazuma.

Mayura/Loki- Mayura is just such a bubbling character to write, so it’s a bit different and along with logical Loki, it’s fun to mess with.

Haruhi/Kyon- I’ve started to recently write more for them. ANYTHING can happen with Haruhi, so that give me an unlimited list of ideas I can work with.

What would you call your writing “style”?

Hmm...I suppose amusing works. I try not to re-use cliche ideas over again or if I do, I try to at least put a different spin on things.

Do you read other people’s fanfic? If so, what do you find yourself reading the most?

Very much. I read anything with a good plot and characterization or something that can at least make me laugh.

Name one thing you’d LOVE to write, but have been too afraid or shy to do.

Lemon scenes...yeah, I could never get myself to write one let alone post it on the internet. @_@

Do you have trouble taking criticism? Or worse yet, do you have the dreaded bloated ego?

Since I want to actually publish my stories someday, I want criticism because I’m always trying to improve my writing skills.

When you write, is there anything that helps? Music? Quiet room?

A cup of coffee and a quiet room. Don’t know why, but a cup of coffee always puts me in the right mind set. It got me through a lot of essay writing.

What inspires you?

T.V. shows, random facts I read, manga/anime, novels or maybe just some random idea I get when I’m bored and daydreaming.

Lastly, how would you sum up your fanfiction experiences and yourself as a writer?

I’ve certainly read a lot of fanfiction and can tell a good from a bad one usually by the end of a first chapter. I would say I’m much more confindent in my writing skills than my drawing ones, but that doesn’t mean I would claim to be an expert. I’m always willing to learn and improve my skills.

Tag some friends because they’ll hate you for it.

Nope! Do it if you want, but none of you have too.

Oh, Zelgadis, your secret is out. ~.^ That was a really cute little example. XD

I feel the same way about lemons, I think. It's something I might want to try writing one day, but I'm not sure how I'd go about it anyway *ahem*lackofexperience.

Sitting down to write out ideas is definitely the hard part! Not to mention completing unfinished stories.

I agree with you and zenavvy, I wish I could write lemon too (or perhaps, I wish I could WRITE, since I never finished a fanfic, just short episodes of round robin fics)

My sister read your last fic
http://earthstar-chan.livejournal.com/83103.html#cutid1

and she liked it so much that she wants to translate it in italian and to put it on her site ( http:\\andreslayers.altervista.org )
So I'm asking for permission, can she translate it? She will give all the proper credits, of course ^__^

Round robing fics are fun to write since you don't have to worrying about thinking up an ending. ^_~

Wow, really? Sure, by all means, go right ahead. I would be honoured. ^_^ (which reminds me that I need to get around posting that fic on fanfiction.net)
