While I wait for the second half of Slayers Revolution, one of the two new anime I'm watching to keep me occupied is "Tales of the Abyss" anime.
So far it's off to a good start. First of all, the opening got points for using the same opening song of the game. The lyrics of the song just fit the theme and story of the game so well, it would be difficult to write or pick another song for the opening.
The animation is also good and it's great to see the characters expressions in full anime form. It's is a bit weird to see the characters in a bit of a different style, but it's not something I couldn't get use to. If anything, I love the animation for the fontic artes.
However, one thing I'm especially pleased with so far is the pacing of the story. In past anime version of Tales game, they had a bad habit of going too fast a pace with the plot to the point they were were skipping big chucks of the game itself. Examples of this would be Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Symphonia. Now granted, they were OVAs and only had four episodes and Symphonia is suppose to get another four episodes to wrap it up, but the anime plot would be very confusing to a person who hadn't play the game to fill in the missing scenes.
So far, the Tales of the Abyss anime has been good to fill in the audience of what's going on, especially to people who hadn't play the game. Mind you, Abyss has the advantage of having 26 episodes instead of only four, but even then it could be easy to leave some people in the dark if they're not careful. They only time the having played the game would come in handy is noticing the inside jokes. Such as, the episode titles are the same style use in the game when the name of a new town is revealed. Also, during the ending song, at the very end Mieu lands on an actual save point as if saying "Okay, we'll save this point of the story until you get back." That is way too cute for me.
Anyway, for people looking for a fantasy anime with action, humour and also good characters and plot, while we wait for the second half of Slayers then I would recommend Tales of the Abyss. The game was great so I have high hopes for the anime. The first three episodes are subbed and up on youtube ^_~

Date: 2008-10-13 06:10 pm (UTC)I'll have to check this out later. I have to dash soon, and I'm sitting in 'no man's land' for watching video without earphones since some roommates are weird about that. (Sadly, I must eat food!)

Date: 2008-10-13 09:33 pm (UTC)If you like fantasy, I'd really recommend The 10th Kingdom (live-action American fantasy show). It's about a girl and her father who get transported to the world of Grimm's fairytales. It's very fun, surprising, and romantic! XD
