I was watching the Nostalgic Critic's Top 12 Christmas Specials, and I was surprised to discover that among the list was Disney's The Little Match Girl short. I didn't even know this existed, and the Critic explained not many people do because it was released on the Little Mermaid special edition DVD. So, I went looking on youtube and found it.

Disney 2D animations I had missed you so. It's nice to see new animation, even if it's only 6 minutes long. Mind you, I always found The Little Match Girl so sad. (I know it's a deeper story than that but...)

So, if you're like me and prefer a happier ending, then I suggest you take a look at how Terry Pratchett's "Hogfather" special handles the story.

That's how the story should have ended if you ask me. XD

Aw. T_T I didn't know there was an animated version, but I do remember reading that story a long time ago in one of my classes. I always thought it was sad.

Though the Hogfather ending was much happier. ^^ Reminds me that I should catch up on my Discworld reading.

I never liked the story either, it's too sad for me. I liked the Hogfather's version a lot more.

I've read one of the Discworld books (Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] gullwhacker ) I need to read some more.

I've read the first and I'm about halfway through the second, but I haven't been spending much time on it lately. Hehe, everything is so backwards in them. XD

Wow, kudos to Disney for this! I'm surprised and impressed, and utterly in love with the animated one! ;D Thanks for sharing!

Even though I don't care for the story much, I do love the animation for it. It's so pretty. ^_^

Bah, what? What?? I failed to mention The Little Match Girl had been animated?? (Shame on you for not collecting the special edition DVD releases!) I did see it when I bought the Little Mermaid, and man oh man did I cry... They included it on the DVD since both stories are by Hans Christian Andersen. There's another Disney short somewhere, but I forgot what movie DVD they included it on. ...something to search for later. (It involves children flying kites.)

I already owned the Little Mermaid on VHS and since it's not my favorite movie, I didn't bother buying it. *cough* Trying to save money at the time *cough*

It is a sad story, the one I saw on youtube made me cry. It's just nice to see 2D animation, even if they are just shorts.

Gah I hate the story of the little match girl. The story resumes itself at "Her life sucked, but she believed in god, so she died happily!" so meh. But wow, the animation rocks! I find she looks a little like Mulan, actually.

I thought she looked liked Mulan too and I love the animation.

For the story, that's why I prefer Terry Pratchett version in Hogfather (the clip below it.) Stu was telling me it's even funnier in the novel because when the angels show up Death (the guy in the santa suite) says "Why didn't you show up earlier" and even throw snowballs at them. XD
