Here's more of that Slayers fic I've been working on. This is my rough draft, so be warned there may be some spelling/grammer errors.

And in this chapter, I have some cameos. [livejournal.com profile] zenavvy I think you'll enjoy this part of the story. ^_~

Series: Slayers

Chapter 4

“Let’s see,” Gourry muttered as he crossed the street. “Was it a right corner and then turn left, or a left corner and then turn right.” He grumbled sourly as he rattled his brain. “Damn, I wish I had paid attention when we walked there.”

Thinking back, maybe he should have had Pokota come along with him. Gourry shook his head. No, it was better he stayed with Amelia. He all ready had two kids wandering around by themselves, last thing he needed was for something bad to happen to Amelia while he and Pokota both went after Lina and Zelgadis.

In hindsight, he could have taken both Amelia and Pokota with him, but somebody should stay at the inn in case they did get back before Gourry caught up with them.

The swordsman sneezed. Damn! It was getting cold. He rubbed his hands. “I hope Lina didn’t get into trouble.”

“We’re in big trouble!” Amelia cried.

“I can see that!” Lina yelled, trying to block out the noise by covering her ears with her hands.

“What the hell is going on?!” yelled Talus from his bedroom.

Lina cursed and snatched the bottle. “We got to get out of here!”

The three of them ran at top speed. Amelia took the lead, with Zelgadis in second, and Lina taking up the end.

“We’ll split up and meet at the inn!” Zelgadis yelled as he shoved the curtain aside. “There’s more risk of us getting caught if we stay together.”

Zelgadis let the curtain fall from his hands. If he had looked back he would have noticed it knocked Lina right in her face. The bottle flew out of her hand. She had a terrified sense of déjà vu. The bottle spun in the air. Lina leapt to catch it.

The bottle barely touched her fingertips before it shattered. Lina landed on her stomach it, eating a mouthful of floor. She then promptly banged her head against it. “I *bang* can’t *bang* *believe *bang* it* bang* happened *bang* twice!” She gripped her hair and pulled hard. “Can this day possibly get any worse?!”

There was a loud cough. The bell had stopped ringing. Lina looked up and stared at Talus’s tapping foot. “I need to learn how keep my mouth shut.”

8080808080808080808080808

A couple of blocks away, far from the bell ringing shop, Zelgaids slumped against a lamp post, huffing and puffing. He had never ran so fast in his life. His lungs were burning from the lack of air. Amelia and Pokota had gone in the opposite direction when they left the shop, although he had no idea where Lina had gone.

He buried his face into his small hands. They were so close! He prayed that Lina had managed to hold onto that spring water. It would be a pain in the butt if they had to steal the bottle all over again. He massaged his temples. There was no point in grumbling here on the street.

The sensible thing to do would be to go back to the inn and wait for the others to show up. He could even run himself a bath while he waited. Rubbing his chilled arms, the thought of a hot bath was enticing.

“Hey kid, you okay?”

The small chimera jumped and pulled his mask up before turning. A knot grew in his stomach as his eyes landed on the the guardsman who stood before him.

He was a young man, around Gourry’s age and his hair was equally as blonde. Zelgadis stood his ground as the man smiled and bend down. “It’s rather late for children to be out. Are you lost? Where are your parents?”

Zelgadis sweated. He did not need a nosy city guardsman. His first thought was to simply tell the guardsman to mind his own business, but he doubt that would work. “No, I’m not lost. My parents are at home and I’m heading there right now.”

The guardsman smiled. “Is that so? In that case, where’s your house? I’ll take you home.”

Zelgadis told himself to remain calm. He could get himself out of this. “No, I can get home by myself.”

The man frowned. “Can’t do that. There’s been a lot of weirdoes causing trouble lately. It wouldn’t surprise me if they decided to pick on a kid next. It’s safer if you stick with me.”

Zelgadis twitched. Out of all the city’s guardsmen in town, he had to get the smart one.

“Thanks, but no thanks. I’m fine.”

“I don’t believe that,” the man said. “Just tell me where you live and I’ll leave you alone.”

Zelgadis considered his options. He could make a run for it, but that would make the guardsman more suspicious. There was only one option. He would have to lie. Quickly scanning the area, Zelgadis randomly pointed at a house up the street.

“My house is right there! See, I don’t need you to walk me home.”

The guardsman showed no reaction. He stared at the house for a minute and said “The third house on the right?”

Zelgadis relaxed. The guardsman was buying it. “Yes, that’s it.”

“That’s funny,” the guardsman’s eyes narrowed. He folded his arms and stared at Zelgadis. “Because that’s my house.”

Panic rose. Zelgadis eyes widened. He attempted to run, but the guardsman grabbed him by the back of his shirt. Zelgadis waved his arms and legs madly. “Let me go!”

The guardsman swung him over his shoulder like Zelgadis was a sack of flour. “Sorry kid, not until I find your parents.”

Zelgadis glared at him fiercely. The guardsman laughed. “Nice glare kid. Yours is just as good as a friend of mine's.”

“Guy!” yelled a red haired guardsman running up to them.

“Speak of the devil.”

The red haired man panted, leaning against his knees. “There you are! What’s was taking you so long? We were supposed to be on patrol ten minutes ago.”

“Sorry Luke, I was dealing with lost junior here.”

“I’m not lost!” Zelgadis bellowed, loud enough to wake the people a town over.

Luke plugged his ears. “No need to scream kid. We’re the good guys!”

“I beg to differ,” Zelgadis muttered and glared more when Guy patted him on the head.

“We’ll have to take him to headquarters, until we can find his parents.”

Luke grumbled. “Oh, great. With everything else we’re dealing with Jade is going to love this. That weird friend of his is still visiting isn’t he?”

The guardsmen sauntered off, engaged in their conversation. Zegaldis tried to free himself, but Guy had a tight grip on him. He could bite him, but Guy was wearing thick gloves. It wouldn’t do much damage and he wasn’t in a proper angle to attack his ear or neck. Much to his humiliation, Zelgadis the heartless sorcerer swordsman had been captured by one mere guardsman. This night couldn’t be any worse.

808080808080808080808

At the exact same moment, Amelia collapsed on the sidewalk with Pokota lying beside her. “That did not go as I planned,” Amelia panted. “I hope Miss Lina and Mister Zelgadis got away safely.”

Pokota forced himself to stand. “They’re probably at the inn by now. We should go back too.”

Amelia climbed to her feet. “I wonder where Mister Gourry is? He went ahead of us, so he should have been there by the time we got there.”

“Who cares,” Pokota muttered. “He’ll come back to the inn eventually. Let’s just wait for him and the others there.”

The princess was about to reply, but a crash cut her off. She and Pokota exchanged perplexed looks and crept around the corner. The glass from a broken shop window was shattered on the ground. Amelia’s blood boiled as her eyes rested upon the group of young men gathered around the small building.

They lovingly stroke their wooden bats and snickered. “We should get more fun jobs like this,” one of the men sneered.

Amelia’s fists tightened.

“Let’s just go in and smash the place up,” said another crushing a piece of glass with his boot. “The sooner we finish the job, the sooner we get paid.”

Amelia’s eyes shone with the flame of justice. Pokota sweated. He saw and recognized all the warning signs, but he had no more power to stop Amelia than he would a tornado.

A third laughed. “After this, let’s have a drink at the bar.”

“STOP YOU FIENDS!!”

The whole group jumped and whirled around.

On top of the lamp post, her cape flapping in the night wind proudly stood Amelia. She pointed her finger of justice at them. “In the name of justice I will not allow you villains to ruin an honest working man’s shop to fulfill your evil desires.”

“How the hell did a kid climb up there?” asked one of the men.

Amelia glared, flipped in the air and landed on her face. The men stared baffled as Amelia wiped the dirt of her face. She wasted no time to regain her posture. “Surrender now villains and I promise to be lenient-“

One of the men roughly grabbed her by her hair. “Listen brat, we don’t have time to play games with you!” He seized her by the chin. “Be quiet or we’ll do to you what we did to that shop window.”

Amelia glared and swiftly bit his hand. The man yowled and dropped Amelia. He gingerly rubbed his hand, then he reached for his bat. “Why you little-“

“Fireball!” Pokota yelled leaping into the air. The men screamed and jumped. The little creature raced to the princess. “Are you okay?!”

Amelia rubbed her bottom. “A little sore, but it takes more than that to defeat justice.”

The men feeling quite bewildered stared at Pokota. “What the hell is that thing?!” one of the yelled.

A sharp whistle rippled through the air. “Stop right there!” a female voice shouted.

The men’s eyes widened. “Crud! It’s the city guard! Let’s get out of here!”

Barely seconds after they ran, a short blonde haired woman came running. She would have run over Pokota if Amelia hadn’t grabbed him at the last minute and held him like a stuffed toy. “Stop in the name of the law!” the woman yelled.

“Natalia forget it!” a long brown haired woman called as she approached them. “They’re long gone.”

Natalia stomped her foot. “It’s bad enough they’re smashing town shops, now they’ve started to use magic too.”

Amelia blinked. Did they not see Pokota? “Um..but that wasn’t-“ Pokota tugged her sleeve and he shook his head. He would rather not risk being arrested by the city guardsmen.

The woman named Natalia turned to Amelia. “Did they hurt you?”

The princess shook her head. “As a warrior of justice I can never be defeated by such villains.”

Natalia blinked. “Right…but little girl, you shouldn’t fight a whole group like that. You’re lucky you weren’t hurt.” She glanced from left to right and turned to the second woman. “Tear, do you see her parents anywhere?”

Tear shook her head and frowned. “Are you lost little girl?”

Amelia sweated. Uh-oh. “Oh no, I’m just on my way back to the inn.”

“Which inn is it?” Tear asked. “Well take you home.”

“And have a chat with your parents,” Natalia muttered. “Children should not be left alone like this.”

“Oh it’s…” Amelia froze. The only logical explanation was that Gourry’s forgetfulness was beginning to rub off on her because she couldn’t remember the name of the inn.

Natalia frowned. “You forgot?”

Amelia sheepishly nodded.

Tear folded her arms. “We’ll take you back to headquarters then.”

Natalia gave Amelia a friendly smile. “Don’t worry you and your dolly are safe with us.”

“Dolly?” Amelia glanced down to Pokota, who was just astounded by the name as she was. Pokota was about to about his mouth, but Amelia covered it with her hand. It was probably better if they believe Pokota was a doll for the moment. Besides, they might get back to the others faster if they went with the city guardsmen.

Amelia climbed to her feet, but it was then she noticed Tear staring at Pokota. In fact, she was blushing a little. “That’s a very cute doll.”

A couple of Alleys over, Flan clicked his tongue. “Well that was interesting.”

Zollan’s ears twitched. “What was?”

“Did you notice how protective Pokota got over that girl a minute ago?”

Zollan shrugged. “Sure, but what does that have to do with anything?”

Flan pulled his hat over his eyes. “It gives me an idea on how to nab that sword. Come on, I got a plan.”

Zollan blinked then followed. He wasn’t sure what the dogman had in mind, but he was certain it would be a good one since Flan was the one that thought of it.

Lina yawned. Damn, she was getting tired. What time was it?

“Just you wait until the guardsmen get here!”

If she was lucky she might be able to sneak back before Gourry woke up, but her chances were getting slim now.

“You hear me kid?! They’re going to lock you away for life!”

Lina rolled her eyes. It amazed her that Talus hadn’t lost his voice yet and when were these supposed guards suppose to get here?

“Although, I should be happy,” Lina thought. “It would make things complicated if the guardsmen showed up.” The smart plan would be to cast a few spells, make the shop explode and run. Normally, that would be her plan, but she didn’t want to leave without that spring water. “Zel’s going to kill me when he hears I dropped the bottle…again.”

Lina had been waiting for an opportunity for her to head for the safe and grab the water, except Talus had been yelling at her and it didn’t help matter that he tied her up while doing it.

“Look pops,” Lina replied. “If you keep yelling like that, you’re going to lose your voice.”

“I don’t need advice from you brat!”

“Well, well, what seems to be the commotion?” a dark figure said from down the hall. “I heard the alarm. Is anything wrong? I’m with the city guardsmen.”

Lina raised an eyebrow. She knew that voice. Who did it sound like? “In any case, I better start my escape plan.” Slowly, Lina reached into her back pocket and brought out her pocket knife. “I’ll be free monetarily.”

Talus whirled around and smirked. “Well good timing, I was about to drag this brat down to the station.” The man paused. “Wait, I don’t remember ever seeing you before?”

“I’m new in town,” the voice replied.

It was really bugging Lina now. Where had she heard the voice before? She peeked around Talus.

“Allow me to introduce myself” The man stepped into the light. “I’m Inspecter-“

“WIZER?!!” Lina shouted.

Wizer blinked and stared at her. “Lina Inverse?” He stroked his chin. “I should have known you were behind this.”

Talus stepped back confused. “Wait a sec. Lina Inverse? The Dragon Spooker?”

Lina twitched, and began to saw faster at her ropes.

Talus starched his head. “You got be mental pal. Lina Inverse is an adult.”

Wizer pointed a finger straight at her. “Indeed, but don’t like that innocent face fool you! She’s a notorious criminal!” He paused. “Although, she is normally bigger. What happened to you Lina?”

“That’s none of your business!” Lina snapped. She was almost free of the ropes. “And what are you doing here anyway? I don’t recall this city being part of your jurisdiction.”

“It isn’t,” Wizer explained, folding his arms. “However, an acquaintance of mine is the head of the city guardsmen. They been swamped dealing with the increase gang activity lately. I was visiting him, asking if he had heard any recent news on you in fact, and in exchange for new information on you I agreed to give him a hand.” The inspector smirked. “Although I never imagined I would run into you like this. Adding burglary to your list of crimes now are you?”

Lina raised an eyebrow. “I don’t have time to deal with you now Wizer. It’s a long story.”

“I’m guessing it’s connected with your current state?”

Lina glared. Wizer was slient and then he laughed. “Ah! I see through your plan now!”

Talus blinked, sound very confused. “You do?”

“Yes!” He stroked his chin. “Lina has turned herself into a child because she believed that I wouldn’t arrest her in this state. She assumed that I would have to let her go since she is no longer an adult.”

Lina gapped. “What?” Then she grinned. It would look bad if Wizer arrested a child for an adult crime. Maybe there was an advantage to being a kid.

With a sharp snap, the last thread of rope was cut. “Good, now I can get out of here.”

“A genius plan Lina,” Wizer continued. “However, there is a great flaw. I may not be able to put you on trial,” Wizer smirked. “But I can send you to reform school.”

If Lina hadn’t been sitting in a chair, she would have fallen over. “Reform school?! Wizer you can’t be serious!”

“Don’t worry Lina, I know of a good school.” He leaned in close. “I’m certain they’ll make a model citizen out of you.”

“I’m afraid I’ll have to take a rain check,” Lina replied as she recited an incantation under her breath.

“You don’t have a choice brat,” Talus grinned smugly. “Since you’re tied up-”

Lina jumped forward. “FREEZE ARROW!!”

Arrows of ice shot out. Both Wizer and Talus’s feet were frozen to the floor. The inspector pulled at his leg. Talus shivered and wrapped his arms around himself.

“See you later guys!” Lina sneered sticking her tongue at them. Then she ran out of the store. It wouldn’t take long for them to free themselves, she would have to grab the water later.

She ran down the street. “That plan was a complete bust,” Lina grumbled. “But at least I’ll make it back before Gourry-“

Lina collided into a person. She fell backwards. Rubbing her sore bottom, Lina snapped “Watch where you’re going buster!”

“This coming from the person who came running at top speed, probably after trying to rob a shop?”

Lina froze. She looked up. Nervously, she tucked her hand behind her head. “Oh, hey Gourry.”

The swordsman said nothing as he glared, with his arms folded across his chest. “You are so grounded.”

Haha! You're right, I did very much enjoy this one. ^__^ Excellent cameos! Will we be seeing some of Jade and Anise later?

Wizer's part was brilliant too, with the reform school idea. XD

Oh yes, we'll be seeing Jade, he's in the next chapter. Originally, I wasn't planning on having Anise show up, but just the other day I had a great idea of how to give her a cameo, so she'll be there. It will be like playing where's Waldo?

Wizer's idea is good, although I think the school would be burn down within a week. XD

Great! Sounds like it'll be lots of fun to look forward to. XD Oh, Gourry's last line in the fic was perfect, too!

Haha, true. The only way he'd get it to work would be threatening her with Luna again. ^^;

Yeah, it's the main party from the game Tales of the Abyss. I wasn't sure how many people would catch the reference.

Also, I had to put in Wizer. He's a fun character to use. ^_~

The moment the trio decided splitting up was best, I was silently screaming, "No! NOOO!" and it seems for good reason. All things considered, they got off rather light for kids wandering about at night. I feel a bit pathetic for knowing who the cameos were without really knowing who the characters are, beyond Tales characters... O:)

Whahahaha! Our evil plan is working, we will make you a Tales fan.

Yeah, you know there's going to be trouble the moment they split up, but that makes it more fun.

(You know there is a Tales of the Abyss anime now, so you could watch that without playing the game to understand the characters.)
