The other day [livejournal.com profile] dqbunny and I were admiring fake desserts that people have made of out felt. As if this wasn't enough to get my sewing urge going, I then saw Megs post about her well done strawberry scroll cake So yesterday, I had to make this. A felt chocolate cake, although I still want to make strawberry felt dessert thanks to a good strawberry tutorial I found.

Anyway here are pictures. Be warned, I may end up trying to make more. They're just neat to create and look at.

In other news, I've been watching a lot of Darkwing Duck lately. You know, when rewatching some of the episodes, it's amazing what the writers were able to get away with. For example, here's one episode when Darkwing Duck has actually died and is running from the Grim Reaper. Granted, it turned out to be a dream in the end, but still I don't think that's something you would see in today's childrens' shows.

Maybe it's just me, but if feels like the old Disney afternoon shows (Darkwing Duck, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, Gummi Bears, Gargoyles, etc) had a certain quality to them that you don't see in a lot of western childrens' cartoons today. There are some modern cartoons for kids that I think are equally good as the old Disney shows. Avatar: The Last Airbender, Stormhawks and Danny Phantom, are some examples that come to mind, but it doesn't feel as common with all the preteen Disney sitcoms being made and aired repeatedly...or that could just be the nostalgia talking.

We say a lot "Back in the day, series were better!" But I think there is just about as much good shows now as before. For all the good shows, they also produced a lot of crummy shows. like now, you only get a gem out of 5 animated shows. Granted, I think they did have more "good" shows back then, but I think this "Golden age of children animation" was mostly caused by the quantity of shows produced, which was a whole lot, hence more good shows stood out.

*nods* Good point. Looking back, there were quite a few dumb shows as well. It just lately, it feels like networks are focusing more on creating live action shows for kids to watch rather than produce animated shows (Example, Hannah Montana, Icarly, etc), so it doesn't feel there are as many especially when compared to when we were kids.

Mind you I do believe that nothing lasts forever. So, even though the "Golden Age of children animation" seems to have ended, this trend of current shows won't last forever either. It wouldn't surprise me if we had another period of golden animation a few years of now, but that's just me.

I agree to that, since there were a ton of cartoons I didn't like back in the day, but the writing itself is very different. There are some things that you can no longer get away with, and even back in the day you didn't get away with it for long. Joanne mentioned Darkwing Duck dying but it only turning out to be a dream, but we had something much more serious in Gargoyles where Broadway shoots Elisa with her own gun and we do see her nearly die! o_O The episode got a lot of praise back in the day, but it also wasn't aired in reruns.

I've been watching a lot of The Real Ghostbusters as of late, and it also has a lot in it that we don't see in cartoons anymore: older main characters (they're all grown men, no children or teens here!), nothing is dumbed down considering all of the science jargon used, and my gosh, Cthulu is even featured in an episode! Do cartoons even dare touch on H.P. Lovecraft anymore? (HECK NO.) What I found really cool is that a lot of the writers for cartoons back in the day went on to write for other television series aimed at older audiences. Just the other day such a writer's name popped up, so it's nice to know that the really good writers are still out there doing their thing.

But, yuuuuuuuck, I really detest the live-action Disney shows. Oddly enough, my Canadian roommate this past year was always watching them. I couldn't stand how stupid they were, and the writing was so lame! I think kids are being sold short on what they can and can't appreciate. I'm really hoping we'll see a return to awesome shows again with the children of the 80s moving into professional careers. Anything to get rid of all the lame and time-wasting garbage on the t.v. now!

Actually, after watching Darkwing Duck, I thought I would look up some of the writers that worked on the old Disney shows.

I read in a interview with Tad Stones (one of the men who worked on Darkwing Duck) talked about how back then the writers had A LOT more freedom to write than other shows.
Here's the interview if you wanted to read it: http://www.quickstopentertainment.com/2007/02/05/interview-tad-stones/

Too much talk on Hellboy...

But yeah, they had less red tape to deal with. That must have been nice.

Well, I skipped over the parts on Hellboy. ^_^;

There were questions about the old Disney afternoons cartoons near the bottom.

It's possible that it's a mix of nostalgia, but I do know that I'm not all that big a fan of the cartoons out there today either. I used to watch the superhero ones, but then.. I don't know, I guess they got uninteresting to me. Like you said, there are some that are still good, but then there are other kid shows that I'm like.. really? The writing is terrible (especially in live action kid shows, which I stay far, far away from) and the jokes are lame.

Another thing that's kind of sad is that there are no more educational "live action" shows that I can think of. Like the ones that PBS used to show, like Bill Nye the Science Guy, Reading Rainbow, or Lamb Chop's Play-Along. A lot of cartoons have this annoying artwork, too. I don't know the name of the show, but there's this one show my mom likes to watch (I know, my mom watches cartoons, lol) and the animation has all giant bug-eyes and odd-shaped bodies for the animals that talk. It's just.. ugh.

Yeah. There was even a live action math show (which is probably the hardest subject to make into a children's show) that was actually really good. It was fun to watch because they did a lot of parodies, but still did it in a way to get kids to learn about math.

And there used to be a lot more puppet educational shows too.

I remember there was one show about three mice living in a library that was really cute. I use to watch it before I headed off to school.

it looks cute! the puff of cream always get to me <3
i have to agree with you with the type of shows they air nowadays. they don't have that same thrill factor they had way before. i feel they're censoring too many things.

Thanks! I love making the puff of creams. They're a nice touch.

Yeah, I think that's the biggest factor in some of the qualities of cartoons today. The writer of Darkwing Duck mentioned that the writers didn't have to worry so much about censorship when the wrote the Disney afternoon cartoons. Although, I have seen writers find creative ways to get jokes and gags pass the censors.

This top 11 list is a good example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY0IVHTG2so

must be hard for them to come up with good scripts with so much censorship ^^;;

lol that was an awesome vid XD
man, those writers were pretty sneaky

Oh, how delicious-looking! lol you and DQ have a real talent for creating plush deserts that look good enough to eat, you know that? *o*

I loved Darkwing Duck when I was a kid -- hands down one of my favorite Disney shows. I agree totally when you say cartoons these days are just not up to snuff with the cartoons we grew up with. Frankly, a lot of them are terrible. My number one pet-peeve with today's animated shows are the character designs -- I hate most of them. I could easily start a rant about this but I'll save you the horror of me rambling lol. :p Suffice to say I wish the good ol' days would return to kid's television. The plots were so much better too -- better plots, better dialogue, better show.

Thanks! Making felt desserts is really fun.

Yeah, some of the character designs really make me twitch. However, I do believe that nothing lasts forever, so at some point we'll probably get more cartoons that are similar in quality to the shows we grew up with. The only question is how long the current trends will last.

Hopefully not long. I was horrified to see what they did to my beloved Transformers from my 80's youth. :( The new style is just -- argh, no. I'm not sure what the trend is taking all the old stuff and re-doing it but I wish they wouldn't. ^^; I would much rather they used the old shows if they're going to revive Ninja Turtles and Transformers -- remastered and, if absolutely necessary, dubbed over to reflect the new times of course.
