Felt Desserts Craze Continue
Aug. 20th, 2009 11:46 pmThe other day
dqbunny and I were admiring fake desserts that people have made of out felt. As if this wasn't enough to get my sewing urge going, I then saw Megs post about her well done strawberry scroll cake So yesterday, I had to make this. A felt chocolate cake, although I still want to make strawberry felt dessert thanks to a good strawberry tutorial I found.
Anyway here are pictures. Be warned, I may end up trying to make more. They're just neat to create and look at.

In other news, I've been watching a lot of Darkwing Duck lately. You know, when rewatching some of the episodes, it's amazing what the writers were able to get away with. For example, here's one episode when Darkwing Duck has actually died and is running from the Grim Reaper. Granted, it turned out to be a dream in the end, but still I don't think that's something you would see in today's childrens' shows.
Maybe it's just me, but if feels like the old Disney afternoon shows (Darkwing Duck, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, Gummi Bears, Gargoyles, etc) had a certain quality to them that you don't see in a lot of western childrens' cartoons today. There are some modern cartoons for kids that I think are equally good as the old Disney shows. Avatar: The Last Airbender, Stormhawks and Danny Phantom, are some examples that come to mind, but it doesn't feel as common with all the preteen Disney sitcoms being made and aired repeatedly...or that could just be the nostalgia talking.

Date: 2009-08-21 04:16 am (UTC)Mind you I do believe that nothing lasts forever. So, even though the "Golden Age of children animation" seems to have ended, this trend of current shows won't last forever either. It wouldn't surprise me if we had another period of golden animation a few years of now, but that's just me.

Date: 2009-08-21 04:23 am (UTC)I've been watching a lot of The Real Ghostbusters as of late, and it also has a lot in it that we don't see in cartoons anymore: older main characters (they're all grown men, no children or teens here!), nothing is dumbed down considering all of the science jargon used, and my gosh, Cthulu is even featured in an episode! Do cartoons even dare touch on H.P. Lovecraft anymore? (HECK NO.) What I found really cool is that a lot of the writers for cartoons back in the day went on to write for other television series aimed at older audiences. Just the other day such a writer's name popped up, so it's nice to know that the really good writers are still out there doing their thing.
But, yuuuuuuuck, I really detest the live-action Disney shows. Oddly enough, my Canadian roommate this past year was always watching them. I couldn't stand how stupid they were, and the writing was so lame! I think kids are being sold short on what they can and can't appreciate. I'm really hoping we'll see a return to awesome shows again with the children of the 80s moving into professional careers. Anything to get rid of all the lame and time-wasting garbage on the t.v. now!

Date: 2009-08-21 05:03 am (UTC)I read in a interview with Tad Stones (one of the men who worked on Darkwing Duck) talked about how back then the writers had A LOT more freedom to write than other shows.
Here's the interview if you wanted to read it: http://www.quickstopentertainment.com/2007/02/05/interview-tad-stones/

Date: 2009-08-21 08:42 pm (UTC)Another thing that's kind of sad is that there are no more educational "live action" shows that I can think of. Like the ones that PBS used to show, like Bill Nye the Science Guy, Reading Rainbow, or Lamb Chop's Play-Along. A lot of cartoons have this annoying artwork, too. I don't know the name of the show, but there's this one show my mom likes to watch (I know, my mom watches cartoons, lol) and the animation has all giant bug-eyes and odd-shaped bodies for the animals that talk. It's just.. ugh.

Date: 2009-08-21 10:41 pm (UTC)And there used to be a lot more puppet educational shows too.
I remember there was one show about three mice living in a library that was really cute. I use to watch it before I headed off to school.

Date: 2009-08-21 09:17 pm (UTC)i have to agree with you with the type of shows they air nowadays. they don't have that same thrill factor they had way before. i feel they're censoring too many things.

Date: 2009-08-21 10:46 pm (UTC)Yeah, I think that's the biggest factor in some of the qualities of cartoons today. The writer of Darkwing Duck mentioned that the writers didn't have to worry so much about censorship when the wrote the Disney afternoon cartoons. Although, I have seen writers find creative ways to get jokes and gags pass the censors.
This top 11 list is a good example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY0IVHTG2so

Date: 2009-08-22 12:43 pm (UTC)I loved Darkwing Duck when I was a kid -- hands down one of my favorite Disney shows. I agree totally when you say cartoons these days are just not up to snuff with the cartoons we grew up with. Frankly, a lot of them are terrible. My number one pet-peeve with today's animated shows are the character designs -- I hate most of them. I could easily start a rant about this but I'll save you the horror of me rambling lol. :p Suffice to say I wish the good ol' days would return to kid's television. The plots were so much better too -- better plots, better dialogue, better show.

Date: 2009-08-22 01:57 pm (UTC)Yeah, some of the character designs really make me twitch. However, I do believe that nothing lasts forever, so at some point we'll probably get more cartoons that are similar in quality to the shows we grew up with. The only question is how long the current trends will last.
