The Princess and The Frog

eastofthemoonJust came back from seeing The Princess and The Frog with Stu. I loved it! I think Naveen might become my favorite Disney prince. It was just wonderful to see traditional animation in the works again. Also, Doctor Facilier might be one of the darkest Disney villains yet.
I've noticed that some people were complaining about Ray's death, even that guywiththeglasses in the Bum reviews because it kind of came out of no where. Some even argued that it ruined the positive tone of the whole movie.
I would have to disagree with it. Yes, Ray's death was a bit of a surprise, but it does fit in the movie plot because of four things:
1. It wrapped up the side plot of Ray and Evangeline. He got to be with her in the end, and I'm honestly not sure how else they could have finished it.
2. It just showed how nasty and dark Doctor Facilier was as a villain.
3. To Doctor Facilier, Ray was just a bug something a normal person who swat.
4. But here's the big thing, to Doctor Facilier it was a bug that was taking down his shadow creatures. So Doctor Facilier thought "Crud" I got to get rid of this thing and he's probably one of the few villains to actually kill off a main character.
So, yes, Ray's death was sad and it took you off guard, but he went down fighting and was winning against shadow creatures, who could only be defeated by one other person, Mama Oldie. So, at least (as Linkara would put it) Ray went down in his crowning moment of awesomeness.
EDIT: This would just pointed out to me. Timon's theory was right! Remember?
Timon: They're fireflies. Fireflies that got stuck up in that big blueish-black thing.
Overall, it was a great movie! Here's hoping this is the start of more traditional animated movies.

Date: 2009-12-19 07:15 pm (UTC)Complaining about Ray's death? The end of the funeral was one of the greatest moment of the movie, one of the few I didn't expect (and I cried).
What I found weird was that Facilier had squashed him with his foot and all his limbs were all in one place XD
Facilier's death, on the other hand, would have caused me nightmares if I were still a child ^^ (but I'm not, so I liked it :P)
I adore Naveen's voice ("unless you beg for more" is one of my favourite lines XD)
