Day #10: Your favorite song

You'll Be Here In My Heart is not a long song, but it's just so sweet and touching. Kala just sings it so gently and with lots of love. With that said, Kala is one of my favorite Disney moms.

I think what I love most about this song is that it doesn't just describe a love between a parent a child, you can use it for a couple, or for close friends. The full Phil Collins version is also nice to listen too, and I love the broadway version of it.

By the way, I followed [livejournal.com profile] dqbunny example and did the Multi-fandom friending meme ^_~

Hey, Tarzan is also the only movie where both parents are alive and their kid dies instead. reversed for Tarzan's real parents though.

What's with Disney and parenthood?

Also, when you think about it, this movie is a good message for adoption. Tarzan sees Kala as his real mother even if they aren't related by blood.

I don't know, I've seen papers written on the "lack of parents" topic. I think one of the theories is that a character will have more hardship if they lose one or both of their parents, and thus make it more interesting story. Not sure if I agree with it fully, but a child would have to mature faster if a parent/parents died when they were young.

Disney does it so we'll instantly have more empathy for the character. True story. Aladdin is an extreme case as his mother did originally have a role in the movie, but they were struggling to make Aladdin likable with his mom around. He'd really just be a punk if he's running around stealing and having his mom to answer to. Eventually Mom gets the death sentence and we come to nothing but a random person mentioning Aladdin is an orphan.

Anyway, in Tarzan's case they were following the source material as the author's family required Disney to do in order to adapt the book to film. Kala losing her own baby made it seem natural that she'd be wanting to care for a baby so when she hears baby Tarzan crying, of course she'd take him in as her own. I am glad Disney was allowed to stray and keep Kala alive. In the book she gets killed later on by Kerchak, I believe, severing any ties Tarzan had with his ape family.
