Day 07 - The most heartbreaking scene?

anise ion

Anise and Ion from Tales of the Abyss have one the most heartbreaking scenes. While these two are too young to have a serious relationship (Anise is only 13 and Ion 14-15 I think) they did have the potential of their close relationship becoming more when they're older. They were a very cute couple.

For those who don't know, here's a brief summary. Ion is forced to read a prophecy on a stone that only he can read, but it will kill him. The badguy here kidnaps Anise's parents and forced her to bring Ion to it. So, yeah, Anise basically had a large hand in how Ion died and you know the guilt is killing her.

Anise really had it bad in that game. The duel with Arietta later on is just as depressing as Ion's scene. And then she has to deal with looking at the new copy whenever she visits the cathedral after that. :(

Arietta always makes me really sad in that she's missing the original Ion who has already been dead for the last few years. (If you ever read the manga version, you'll discover that the original Ion was not that nice of a person. @_@_

I agree with you, that scene was always such a tearjerker--and it's actually one of the few the anime did well (I think it was somehow even sadder, from what I remember!). It's even more depressing when you realize that Ion only actually lived for about two to three years, too.

It's probably even sadder in the anime because you have a clear view of Anie's expression while in the game you don't get a close view of her face until after Ion's death. Poor Ion, he really got cheated. ;_;

So the Tales of the Abyss anime is actually good!? I didn't bother tracking down fansubs because game-to-anime adaptations almost always suck and I was burned by the lousy Tales of Phantasia anime.

I'm pretty sure it was licensed recently. I'll totally have to check it out now.

Oh, no, it was still kind of bad. XD;; It's just that Ion's death scene was one of the few they actually did well. The problem with the anime is that they were actually too faithful in adapting the game--it does tend to feel like you're watching somebody else do sidequests, and the battles are terrible.

For example, one scene that aggravated me was the fight against Van at the Absorption Gate. In the anime, Luke and Tear confront him by themselves first, and Van moves to kill Luke...while Tear stands about two feet away and dramatically screams Luke's name. XP

I will say that the Abyss anime is better than the Tales of Phantasia anime, mainly because they were able to do the whole plot and you don't have to play the game to understand what's going on. However, it's not perfect as Zen just stated below me.

With that said, if you played the game you maybe get bored with the aime because you know EXACTLY what's going to happen next. A person who hadn't played the game would probably find it more enjoyable since they don't know what will happen in the plot. It's hard to explain unless you see it.

Granted, having said all that, I probably will still pick up the anime when it comes out on DVD. XP

Yes, there's that too. I haven't seen the Phantasia or Symphonia animes, but I did hear how they tried to cram all the plot into such a short running time for the Symphonia OVAs, which is just asking for failure. XD;

That's a good point, too. On the one hand, a game-based anime should theoretically have a good chance since it's already got the existing fanbase (I was excited for it in the beginning!), but it's hard to stay interested if there isn't enough new material to set itself apart. I heard they made the ending a bit more clear, but I gave up before I got that far. We needed something else besides animation that was better than the in-game graphics...^^;

Yeah, I think that's the problem. If you haven't played the game, you'll be interested in what's going to happen. If you have played the game it just feels like you're playing it again with someone else using the control. It would have be nice if they put in some new content for the players.

Although, I did like the flashbacks since we didn't get to actually see them in the game, they were just mention. Example, Natalia remembering taking care of young Luke after his "kidnapping" and seeing Tear's memories, etc. More stuff like that would have been nice.

Yes, but I was going for appearance wise at least. XD

But it's so much funnier if you set Anise and Tear up as cradle-robbers on technicalities!
