I want to wish a big happy birthday to both [livejournal.com profile] merc16 and [livejournal.com profile] kitesareevil Here's a Tangled drabble for you guys. (Note, there's probably some grammar mistakes this. So I apologize for any glaring ones.)

Title: Aftermath
Series: Tangled
Characters/Pairings: Rapunzel/Eugene and Maximus
Summary: After they leave the tower, Rapunzel puzzles over what to do next. This has spoilers for the movie.

The steps of the tower's secret passage were narrow. That alone made it tricky for Rapunzel to keep her balance, but there was also the fact she was still adjusting to the loss of the extra weight of her hair. She reached to the back of her head for the seventh time within the last few minutes. She never realized how much extra weight her long hair had been. She kept expecting to trip on a piece of hair that was no longer there. I never thought my hair would feel so light, although, I never thought short hair would feel this nice either.

Pascal gave a gentle nudged from her shoulder. She smiled and stroked his head. "I'll have to think about if I want to grow out my hair again."

"Rapunzel, you sure you don't want to just take my hand?," Eugene asked from a few steps down.

Rapunzel rolled her eyes. "For the fifth time no, I can handle walking down stairs-" She missed the next stone step. Pascal gave a frighten yelp as she tumbled forward. With no effort Eugene caught her in his arms. "You were saying Blondie? I told you it would take a while for your balance to readjust."

Rapunzel sighed. "Fine, just for the stairs though and for the record ''Blondie' doesn't quite fit me as a nickname anymore."

Eugene chuckled. "Sorry, force of habit." He gently took her hand and led her down the stairs. Rapunzel stared at him and lay her head on his shoulder. It stayed on his shoulder until they reached the opening.

Rapunzel stepped out first and twirled. She stared up towards the moon that now hung up in the dark midnight sky. I never have to go into the tower again. I can stay out here. The sound of hooves trotting was heard as Maxmius approached from around the corner.

Rapunzel immediately went over and hugged the horse's head. "Did you rescue Eugene? Oh, what a good horse you are!" Max's tail happily wagged as she stroked his neck. Rapunzel laughed and turned back to face Eugene. She stopped.

She spotted the cloak she had seen since before she had a memory. It laid on the ground, with specks of dust covering the lining. That was all that was left of the woman she thought as mother.

A mixture of emotions struck Rapunzel at once. Relief was the first, proof her mother-no Gothel was truly gone. The anger and fury was still raw and fresh. The third feeling was the most shocking, saddness. Rapunzel was astounded at this emotion. This woman stole her from her real parents, tried to convince her the world was no place for her and killed Eugene. Gothel lied to Rapunzel her whole life, why should she feel sad?

Because a small part of me still thinks of her as mother. Rapunzel didn't want to admit that, but she knew she couldn't deny it. Gothel was the most important in her life until yesterday. She knelt down and scooped up the cloak. Even if she lied to her and used her, Rapunzel did have good memories of her mother. Gently, Rapunzel folded the cloak and clutched it to her chest. Perhaps Gothel was an example how a person can be both good and bad, just like the world itself.

She fingered the lining as Eugene slipped his arms around her. "You okay?"

She nodded as Pascal snuggled at her neck. "I'll be fine, really. I'll just need time to take everything in."

Eugene nodded. "And I know just the place to do it." He pulled her towards Max and placed his hand on the saddle. "I hear there's will lovely sunny warm island just an ocean over. I'm sure Max here can-"

Rapunzel pulled her hand back. "Eugene, I can't. I need to go to the palace."

Both Eugene and Maximus froze and blinked. "The palace?" Eugene said slowly. "You mean the place where I barely managed to escape with my head attached and Maximus gave me a heart attack?"

Max snorted.

"Hey, don't deny it, you did." He turned back to Rapunzel. "You mean that lovely place?"

Rapunzel nodded feverishly. "Yes."

Eugene looked dumbfounded. "Dare I ask why?"

"Because I'm the lost princess."

Max's jaw dropped. Swiftly, he moved his head forward and examined Rapunzel closely. His head move up and down and met her at eye level. His eyes widened as his body shook with excitement.

Eugene pushed the stunned horse aside and took Rapunzel by the shoulder. "Punzie, what makes you think you're the lost princess?"

"I remember now." She wasn't sure how to explain it, she was still soaking in the truth herself. She began to ramble. "I remember my real parent's faces, I've been drawing the royal symbol unconsciously my whole life. Then there was the portrait of the baby, It's hard to explain." She grinned excitedly. "I just know in my heart I'm the missing princess."

Pascal nodded and stood straight like a guard.

Eugene raised his hands. "Whoa, whoa, stop. Let's not jump to conclusions just because of what you're feeling-Max what are you doing?"

Rapunzel turned to find the horse laying down on his front legs. His head lay flat on the ground with his eyes shut. Rapunzel blinked. "I think he's bowing to me."

Eugene sighed. "Typical guard horse." He turned back to her. "Fine, let's look at the bare facts before we go rushing back to the kingdom, that's wishes to execute me, I might add." He cleared his throat. "Sure, the princess disappeared eighteen years ago and you would roughly be the same age."

He folded his arms behind his back and began to pace. "And yes, your so called mother locked you away for years to devoid you of any social contact especially from the near by city where the princess was kidnapped." He turned to Rapunzel stroking his chin as if he was giving a lecture.

"And yes, your once magical hair would explain why the princess was taken." He shook his finger. "And yes, there is also the minor detail that your birthday is the exact same day as the princess's..." He paused as his eyes widen. "Oh my gosh, you're the lost princess."

Rapunzel shook her head as Pascal slapped his forehead. "No, really genius?" she replied in a mock tone.

He raised his hands. "Okay, okay. So, you're right." He frowned and took her by the hands. "Then, let me ask you this, are you sure you want to go back? Once you reveal you're the princess there's no turning back." He drew in closer. "I'm no expert, but there's a big difference between living a normal life and a royal one."

Rapunzel chewed her bottom lip. The fuzzy memory of her parents faces surfaced. How long have they been worried about her? She could run away with Eugene this moment and no one would ever find out. But what about her real mother? Did she even still think Rapunzel was alive?

Rapunzel kissed Eugene's cheek. "I have to. Not just because I'm a princess, but for my parents." She stroked his cheek. "And I want to meet them." Her eyes soften and she squeezed Eugene's hand. "But I'll understand if you won't follow me."

Eugene's eyes narrowed. "I've just willing died so you could be happy and free. You honestly think I'm going to let a pair of future in-laws stop me from being with you?"

Rapunzel raised an eyebrow. "In-laws, huh?"

Eugene coughed. "Anyway, I couldn't call myself a gentleman if I let you go back on your own." He turned his head. "Maximus!"

The horse stood straight, it wouldn't have surprised Rapunzel if the horse gave a salute. She giggled as Eugene climbed onto the saddle. He held out his hand. "Can I just ask you a favor?"

She took the hand and pulled herself up to sit behind Eugene. "Anything."

"When you reveal you're the lost princess, can you please order the guards to not chop off my head." He rubbed his neck. "I all ready died once today, so I would rather not make a habit of it."

Rapunzel chuckled. "I'll think about it. You did steal my crown."

"Details, details," he muttered, tapping Maximus to go. Rapunzel and Pascal gave one last look at the tower. "Goodbye," she said quietly to her old home. She straightened herself and turned to look forward to her new life.

Watch out for a few spelling mistakes though. The sentence "She knelt down and scooped up the cloak. Even if she lived to her and used her, Rapunzel did have good memories of her mother." probably should have "lied" instead of "lived"

I'm glad the suggestiong helped! The story really is cute as hell!

Cute! I wonder if Rapunzel CAN grow her hair back out, though? The lock that Gothel cut when she was small certainly seemed stunted, to say the least.

Thanks!

Hmm...good question, maybe it not growing back is a side effect of the flower's powers. Granted, I think she looks cute with short brown hair. ^_^

I kind of got that impression, likening her hair to the flower.

Ha ha ha.. ironically, Eugene becomes the royal barber... XD (personally, I like that there's a princess with a short haircut- not that we'll ever see her represented that way in media)
