For my wedding, I've been thinking that I didn't want to do wedding favors. Everyone I know who has been to a wedding just tucks them into a junk door until four months later when they decide to throw them out. It just seems to be a waste of money to me.

However, then one of my mom's friend told her that her daughter felt the same way when she got married. So, instead of wedding favors, she used the money and donated to the heart and stroke foundation and just left a card at each spot on the table explaining that.

I think that's such a great idea. Since Stu and I, and just about everyone in our families are such big animal lovers, we decided we'll use the money we would have spent on wedding favors and instead donate it to the SPCA.

We also still have an unopened box of milkbones that Abby had gotten for Christmas. So, I thought I would tie a bone to each card, and that will be Abby's contribution to the wedding. (And I'm sure the families dogs, Parker, Willie, Pete and Jasper will be more than happy to help out by eating them for the guests. XD)

That's a wonderful idea! And it's a great tribute to Abby, too.

I tend to keep special event favors like that because I'm a bit of a pack rat and my family goes all out for these things (I still have the baseball-shaped yarmulkes from my cousin's Bar Mitzvah 7 years ago). But I'm probably an exception to the rule. ^_^;

That's what I thought!

If it was a cool favor like what you kept I probably would have kept it. However, most of the weddings I've been too the favors have just been candy, soap, pens, etc. I just thought I would prefer to use the money for a good cause.

That's a great idea! I wish we'd been able to do that, but my husband is Greek Orthodox and those people have funny ideas about how they HAVE to do things...which includes lots of useless wedding favors. Like ceramic dolls with rings attached to them with ribbon and stuff like that. I had no choice in the matter!

(In case it wasn't painfully obvious, I'm not religious at all and I don't put a lot of credence in traditions/superstitions.)

That's too bad, but I can understand why you had to keep the traditions to keep the family happy. I'm just lucky that both mine and Stu's family are both laid back about that kind of thing.

If you don't mind me asking, what kind of wedding traditions do they do at a Greek Orthodox wedding? I love learning about different cultures/religions.

Well, most of the traditions have to do with the actual church ceremony. It's a LONG ceremony and I didn't even get the say "I do" because only the priest speaks the whole time. Everything is done in threes (for the Father, Son and Holy Ghost) and we had to get wreaths on our heads attached with a ribbon in between, and walk around a table three times. There is also a lot of singing and holding candles.

It was a little strange for me, to be honest. ^_^;

I don't know about Greek Orthodox traditions, but my father's devout Catholic family asked my mother to take some "conversion classes" (she comes from a Jewish family) at their church so my parents could have their marriage officially blessed/recognized by the Catholic Church.

Funny story: My mother didn't want to alienate her more devout Jewish relatives by having a Catholic wedding. So they compromised by having a big secular wedding and then doing the solemn, Catholic wedding ceremony the day after with just their parents, siblings, and the priest. So, technically, my parents married each other twice (they even have two different legal marriage licenses!).

That's a good idea. My cousin married a man who was from a Mormon family, so they had their wedding at a recreation center so they could please both families.

And if you don't mind me asking, I've always been curious about Jewish weddings. What kind of traditions do Jewish weddings have?

I haven't personally attended any Jewish weddings yet (my only married cousin lived too far away for me to attend her wedding). But pretty much every big Jewish event (weddings, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, etc) has spontaneous hora and chair dance performances.

Oh, yes, this reminds me. I had to be Baptized as Greek Orthodox to marry my husband. I mean, it didn't HAVE to be Greek Orthodox, specifically, but I had to be Baptized as something within the "holy trinity." I was never Baptized at all as a child as ANY religion, and I had always just wanted an ordained friend or a Justice of the Peace to perform my wedding. So much for that!

Dang, wow!

Mike and I were actually going to be married in a courtroom until I saw this while looking up the requirements. We did the $99 wedding and it was perfect for us. It was very small (the package was a bit different last year), but lovely and suited us both. It helps that both of us are pretty much generic Christian.

Wow, I've never heard about this before. That is quite the creative idea actually. I love how you'll attach doggie bone treats to it all just for that extra touch. Aww yeah.

Second, I think that is a wonderful Idea!

Yeah, it's probably my favorite ship in Shugo Chara. They're interaction and teasing is cute. (I'm just glad the series never had them actually date while Amu is 11-12, that would have been awkward to me. However, I can totally see them dating once she's older. ^_^) Feel free to use the icon if you want.

Also thanks, I think it will be a nice personal touch to the wedding.

Awww! That's a great idea!

When my husband and I got married we got little bottles of bubbles with our names and our wedding date on them, along with custom printed M&M's and mints. Most people ate the M&M's and mints before the evening was through and it was really hilarious to watch my normally uptight relatives blowing bubbles like little kids.

Thanks!

*laughs* Okay, I'll admit I can see bubbles being a lot of fun. No one can resist bubbles!

I'm new to the concept of wedding favors, but when my older sister had a normal wedding, she had my mom make a ton of mini bars of soap as wedding favors. To say they went over well was an understatement, as I believe my little sister's friend did the same thing. A friend recently got married, and her wedding favors consisted of candies in her wedding colors, so they were quickly devoured.

Regardless, it's nice to know there are variations on wedding favors, and your idea sounds like a very good one. I bet the family dogs will enjoy being included! ;)

Stu and my families are big dog lovers, so I think both sides will enjoy it a lot. (His grandparents always had at least one dog for all the 61 years they've been married.)

Is wedding favours the same as wedding gifts?

It'd be nice if the guests chipped in and got the married couple a house XD

From: [identity profile] earthstar-moon.livejournal.com
No they're not. Wedding favors are usually little things the bride and groom give out to their guests. Soap, candies, pens, etc. It's stuff like this: http://www.myweddingfavors.com/

I'm still all up for guest giving Stu and me wedding gifts! XD
