New Thundercats Series
Jul. 30th, 2011 03:50 pmOkay, I just watched the hour premier of the new Thundercats series and so far, I think it's a decent reboot. Granted, the series only started so it's still too early to fully judge it (Mystery Incorporated had a good first episode and that series ended up being a disaster.)
However, I'm really hopeful that this series will be an equal reboot to the new My Little Pony series.
First off, in the original series they had the lizards and other animals be the enemies of the Thundercats without a real reason why instead of just being evil. In the new show however, there is a valid reason for the tension between the species being that while the Thundercats have the best land to grow and make food, it doesn't live much for the other species to live on. Thus, this forces to scrap and find food, so it's understandable why they want to defeat the Thundercats. It will make an interesting conflict to be sure.
The new Lion-O so far is enjoyable. He's a teenager, but feels a bit of an outcast since he doesn't share the view of the other Thundarians (believes in technology, doesn't think the other animals should be treated as they are, etc). Plus, turns out he's being voiced by Will Friedle who is a a voice actor I've always liked (He did Terry in Batman Beyond for an example.) Anyway, I think Lion-O will be a good main character.
There are a few differences from the original show. Tyra is Lion-O's adoptive brother and he's seems bit cocky, so I'll be curious in his character development. Also, in this version Snarf doesn't talk. He's intelligent, and he meows, but he doesn't talk in the original version.
I know some fans probably won't like that idea, but I certainly don't mind it. I didn't mind Snarf talking in the original version, but it doesn't bug me that he doesn't talk in the new version either. (Plus, I must admit, he's updated version is much cuter. I see potential plushie making in the future.)
The series also seems to hint that the original series was the history for the new series, since it's stated the Thundercats came to Third Earth and created their empire. It could just be a reference to the original series, but you never now. Also, Lion-O's original voice actor plays Claudus's, Lion-O's which I think was a nice touch.
I wish I could say if the theme song for the new show is good, but unfortunately, it didn't air this time. I know for a lot of fans that will be an important issue since the original theme song was awesome.
Overall, I think this will be a promising reboot and I'll try to follow and make reviews as I go along. So, here's hoping. *fingers crossed.*

Date: 2011-07-30 07:31 pm (UTC)The new Voltron has been fairly decent so far too. Not zomg GREAT, but decent. Three of the VAs from MLP are on it too (specifically, Rarity, Pinkie Pie's singing voice and Rainbow Dash/Applejack). I've missed the last two eps, but I liked it enough.
*goes to check when Thundercats will rerun*

And I agree that Snarf is totally adorable!

Date: 2011-07-31 05:18 am (UTC)....well, I will if they ever re-run the freakin' thing! My VCR crapped out and I missed it. :P
I'm also a Will Fredle fan (he's a great VA and I still love him for Boy Meets World). So I'm happy to see him get a lead role in this. I haven't heard much of him lately.

Date: 2011-08-01 02:12 pm (UTC)I'm sure they do. I mean, that's not exactly a hard thing to accomplish. -_-
Boy Meets World was a BIG part of my childhood. And I remember being flabbergasted when I realized that Terry McGuinness was voiced by that show's goofy big brother. I never imagined that Will Friedle could ever come across as badass!
