Stars and Dogs

In a past post I mentioned that instead of handing out favors for the wedding, Stu and I are going to make a donation to the SPCA instead and leave milk bones tied with ribbon explaining that. (Both of our families are big dog lover so we know they'll love this idea.)

Well, yesterday, my mom got another awesome idea. At weddings people will often tap their drinks to get the bride and groom to kiss and other weddings do something more silly like a person has to sing or say a quote from Star Wars. Well, Mom made a suggestion that in order for people to get Stu and I to kiss they have to agree to make their own donation for the SPCA (which can be any amount they want) and I think this will be awesome. We'll have a jar decorated with dog stickers or something.

With this suggestion, Stu and I had the following conversation.

Me: So, I just our wedding will have a theme of stars and dogs.
Stu: So....the dog star?
Me: *hits Stu for bad pun*

Overall, I think stars and dogs are very us. XD

But seriously, I think it's great that you're support such a wonderful cause with your wedding. I have a friend who's getting married next August, and I've been helping her with her planning and whatnot, and she had no idea what she's doing for her favors. I may suggest doing donations for a cause of her choice as an option, since that's something she would do anyway.

I find the donation idea just feels good and it just adds a nice touch to the wedding. We had gotten the idea from a friend of mom's who daughter made a donation to the heart and stroke foundation in honour of her father who died from a heart attack. There are a lot of causes you can have fun donating to.

my mom and i love your idea for the SpCA, so instead of souvenirs, if i get married the money will go to local orphanages instead. (yes we still have those)

I think any support for an organization such as the SPCA is a good idea, but I question how difficult that would be. I know when I tend to attend weddings, etc., I don't carry a lot of money. I think the original idea with the milk bone favors might be a bit easier to pull off. You could prepare the tag saying that in lieu of a favor, we have made a donation to the SPCA and if you'd like to do the same, here's how. Then, you can put the jar out with the guestbook so people can drop in donations and then base the kisses off of that.

I think the thing that needs to be avoided is the perception that all you guys want is folks' money, no matter how good the cause is. If folks feel pressured to donate, especially with the economy being the way it is, you might have some pushback.

*nods* That's a valid point and after I mentioned it to Mom, she agrees. Anyway, it's one of many idea so we'll have time to put our heads together. ^_~
