100 Things Blogging Challenge #1 Green Lantern: The Animated Series

It might be a bit early to review this series since only eight episodes have been released, but I figured it's a good place to start for my first review.

Now, I have to say I have never read the Green Lantern comics and my knowledge of them is mainly limited to the Justice League animated series. So, with that said, I was not expecting to enjoy this series as much as I do. Granted, had I known it was being developed by Bruce Tim, I probably would have checked it out sooner.

To put the plot simply, Hal Joran and Kilowog go far out into space to fight the Red Lanterns that have been killing the few Green Lanterns that were out there. The plot is no doubt going to go deeper from here, but it's a good starting point.

You can tell from the early episodes that this is the kind of show that is taking the kids who are watching this seriously and as a result it's enjoyable for adults as well. In the first three episodes alone, we see heroic sacrifice, the cost of vengeance and the issue of using torture. You don't see that much tackled early on in an animated series.

With that said, it is balanced with funny/touching moments and has a good amount of action scenes.

We also have a good mix in characters, we have complicated characters like Razar (who I think is an original character, but I'm not sure on that) but we also have Hal who is a hero and does try to do the right thing, but doesn't always obey the "regulations" to do so. Kilowog and Aya are also quite enjoyable to watch and get proper character development as well.

This show really has me curious as to where the plot is going to take it and I think it's one of the better new cartoon series to come out this year. If you seen Bruce Tim's Batman, Superman or Justice League series, you would probably enjoy this.

Even if you have never seen Green Lantern at all, I don't think that's vital. The show makes it easy for a new comer to understand what's going on without having to read the comics or have seen previous animated versions. This is a good show worth watching.
