Book Review
Jan. 9th, 2005 07:05 pmWell, the Holidays are over and I'm starting my second term at school. Yesterday I did manage to get my hands on the Slayers Premium manga. I like it a lot more then the movie. There's more of a plot and Amelia isn't just knocked out of the battle like she was in the movie.
Some of you probably don't know, but I'm a real bookworm. I'm always looking for a good book, but finding one kind be a hassle at times. So I thought I would make of list of good books I have read for anyone else who are looking for a book to read. Plus, I was bored and I did this for fun. ^_^;
So, don't expect my book reviews to be best reviews ever done. It should also be noted that my favorite gendre is fantasy, so most of these books are in the fantasy gendre.
I may do another book review, but haven't really decided on that yet.
The Thief Lord
Author: Cornelia Funke
Summary: After escaping from their cruel aunt and uncle, Prosper and Bo find themselves taken in by the Thief Lord, the leader of a group of street orphans. The boys soon find themselves involved in a magical mystery and their lives will never be the same.
Comments: This was the first book I read by Cornelia Funke, and she’s quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. The plot kept me wanting to turned the next page and I loved the characters. I’m sure many readers would enjoy this book as well.
A Riddle of Roses
Author: Caryl Cude Mullin
Summary: Meryl has a dream of becoming a bard and goes on a quest to search for Avalon to fulfil it. On her travels, she is joined by anything but normal friends and is soon led into the biggest adventure of her life.
Comments: This is one of my favorite books! One of the best highlights of this book is all the different characters that appear. There’s a variety, from a prankster fairy, to a grouchy oracle. I recommend it to any fantasy lover.
The Maze
Author: Monica Hughes
Summary: Andrea is tired of being bullied by Crystal and her gang. Then she finds a magic maze, but when Crystal attacks her again, Crystal is sucked inside the maze and soon discovers the maze responds to emotions, and the more anger the more dangerous it gets. Now Andrea has to go in the maze and rescue Crystal from the maze and from her own anger.
Comments: This had very good character development which can be hard to find. You see how Andrea and Crystal change throughout the story. The fast pace of the plot made me want to read on. Even if you’re not a fantasy lover, I think almost anyone would like this.
Growing Wings
Author: Laurel Winter
Summary: Eleven year old Linnet’s life changes forever when she starts growing a pair of wings. As her wings grow, Linnet and her mother both find it harder and harder to hide them. Is there any way for Linnet to live with her wings, without cutting them off?
Comments: This had an intriguing plot and real good character development. I especially liked how this story can be related to real life situations of people being born different from the general public. This is more of a sci-fi book, but I think both fantasy and sci-fi fans will enjoy it just the same.
Mairelon The Magician
Author: Patricia C. Wrede
Summary: After Kim gets caught breaking into a traveling magician’s wagon, she thinks she’s done for, until the magician offers her to become his apprentice.
Comments: I found this story very pleasurable. Not only does the plot and mystery keep you on your toes but the characters were fun as well to read. A good book to read on a rainy day.
A Glory Of Unicorns
Author: Bruce Coville
Summary: A collection of short stories about unicorns.
Comments: I think any unicorn lover would love this book. There are many different kind of stories to please just about anyone.
