“Her dress should be yellow!”

“No, it should be blue, and mind your own business!”

“This very well is my business! You would have her riding in a cantaloupe if I hadn’t appeared!”

Ella’s eyes twitched as she watched the two fairies continue to argue, both seeming to have forgotten she was even in the room.

The first fairy that had appeared scowled and pointed her wand at the other. “I should turn you into a frog for that!”

The second fair huffed and waved her wand. “Oh, I very much doubt you could even make me-”

“THAT’S IT,” Ella cried as she rose, snagged both of the fairies wands and pointed at them.

The fairies yelped as the magic struck them and suddenly they were both wearing glittering gowns.

Ella crossed her arms. “Listen, I don’t know what all,” she gestured to them, “THIS is about but you two go to the ball if you think it’s so important. Go as friends, or as a date with each other I DON'T CARE.”

The second fairy blinked stunned. “But, but what about you going to the ball!”

“I never wanted to go!” she held up her book and resisted tossing it at them. “I just wanted to curl up with my cat and read my new book on dragons in peace and quiet!”

The first fairy’s jaw dropped. “But what about meeting the prince, and marrying him-”

“Wow, bold of you to assume I had wanted to get married,” Ella snapped and took a deep breath to calm down as she handed them back their wands. “Whatever-look, just get out of here, okay?”

The fairies glanced at each other with temptation shining in their eyes.

“Are you certain there’s nothing you want from the ball?” the second fairy asked.

“The only thing I wanted was one of the fancy cakes,” Ella said briskly as she returned to her chair. “If you wish to get me one of those, fine, but I'm good thanks.”

The fairies each gave a slow nod and vanished. Ella got to spend the rest of the evening reading with her cat. At the stroke of midnight she found a fancy cake had appeared on the table in the kitchen.

Ella blinked at it as her cat sniffed it. “I was actually joking about the cake.”
