“Here you go Uncle!”

Hyakushiki blinked, confounded. He had just gotten home, sitting down in his favorite chair, when Lily suddenly appeared holding a brightly coloured gift wrapped box with a big red bow on top.

The kaitou laughed. “Well, this is a nice surprise, but what’s the occasion? Christmas didn’t sneak up on me while I wasn’t looking, did it?”

Lily frowned. “Isn’t today your birthday, Uncle?”

Hyakushiki paused, as he quickly tried to remember the date. “Hmm...Why yes, I believe it is, Lily-chan. I forgot.”

“How could you forget your own birthday?” Lily replied, in a surprised tone.

Hyakushiki laughed. “It’s the price of old age.”

“Uncle, you’re not old.”

The kaitou smiled. The truth was, it had just become a habit of his. It had been years since he had received a birthday present from anyone. He never had much of a family to celebrate with, and they were long gone. Occasionally, Hyakushiki would do something special for himself in celebration of his birthday by stealing a priceless jewel or artifact. All the same, as time passed his birthday became nothing more to him than another day of the week.

However, this wouldn’t stop Hyakushiki from accepting gifts. He happily accepted the gift and took a closer look at it. “You did a very good job wrapping it, Lily-chan.”

“Actually, Dullahan wrapped it,” Lily explained. Hyakushiki wondered how many tries it took the robot before he was able to get it perfectly wrapped. Hyakushiki couldn’t imagine it was an easy task for the robot.

“But, I picked out the present,” Lily continued, blushing with her hands folded behind her back. “I hope you like it.”

“I’m sure I will.” Hyakushiki tugged at the ribbon and tore off the paper. “By the way Lily-chan, how did you find out about my birthday? I’m pretty sure I didn’t tell you.”

“Futaba-chan’s mother told me. Oh, that reminds me.” Lily-chan clapped her hands. “She also baked you a birthday cake. It’s in the dining room.”

Hyakushiki nodded. The Yoshinagas’ never ceased to amaze him. The paper fell to the floor and Hyakushiki took a look into the box. Inside he found a a thick book. “A world history book on magicians,” Hyakushiki read aloud.

“I thought it was interesting, but if you don’t like it, I can get you another book...”

Hyakushiki quieted his young charge by patting her on the head. “It’s fine Lily-chan. It’s a perfect book for me.”

Lily smiled and wrapped her arms around him. “Happy Birthday Uncle.”

Hyakushiki hugged back. Lily didn’t know it, but the girl had already given him the greatest gift he could ever ask for. The love of a family. Maybe they weren’t the most normal of families, but he wouldn’t trade it for all the gems and jewels in the world.

With this thought, Hyakushiki broke the hug. “Now, how about we tell Dullahan we’re ready to tackle that cake?”

Lily nodded and raced towards the dinning room. Hyakushiki smiled and put the book aside, making plans to put it in a special place.
