This was posted in the Avatar community becase Mae Whiteman (voice of Katara) is voicing the main character. However, this character happens to be Tinkerbell.........

That's right, Tinkerbell is going to talk in this movie. @_@ I had heard before they were making a Tinkerbell movie because of the Disney Fairies merchandise they were making. Now, I will admit, I like the Disney fairies because I like the artwork. It was a nice watercolour look to it. I even got the Disney Fairies art book for Christmas two years ago. I also think it was a good idea for a young children book series. What better way to get young girls to read then have book abour fairies.

But a movie? It just feels weird to see Tinkerbell being able to talk. It feels like an old tradition is being thrown away.

Also, is it just me or does John Lasseter not look very enthusiast about this movie?

John Lasseter actually wanted to kill the movie, but they'd already spent too much money on it.

Tinkerbell of course can't talk to humans, but why not her fellow fairies?

That is a good point, and that's probably why I don't mind the books so much.

It just weird to me to actually hear her talk. ^_^;

f you want to take it a step further, Disney already defied convention back when they first made Peter Pan by even making Tinkerbell visible. In all versions before, she was just a ball of light. A lot of people howled when she suddenly looked like a (shapely) young woman, so people freaking now is nothing new.

(Yes, I do love the books I killed myself to pack home from Canada.) ^_-

(Next time we meet up I'll have to show you the art book I got. The artwork is really nice. ^_~)

I think that it's normal to have the main character talk in a movie, BUT they could have been more creative.

Tinkerball sounds like a character from all the other teen movies, sulking for stupid things and speaking with attitude.
Oh my, she doesn't want to tink anymore. I feel bad for her, really *rolls eyes*
They could have used a dubber that sounded more...well more like a fairy XD (for example, take Evanna Lynch's voice: perfect!)

Or they could have her make little bell sounds while she talked, anything to depart from the teenage girl trope ^^

That is a thing, to make a movie you do need to have the character talk (well, unless you use subtitle but I doubt Disney would go to that extent.) I just think they could have been more careful about it.

The voice they choose for her is the main other reason I'm annoyed. While I like Mae Whiteman, I don't think it was the right voice for Tink. It could have been a bit higeer and have her talk less like like a Disney's BRATZ character. (I like the idea of Evanna Lynch).

I think it's weird tinkerbell gets her own movie and stuff because she's originally a peter pan character, and here she's all disney-fied. The whole not talking deal was really true to peter pan (in the original plays, she was a light and a bell), so this is really weird. It's marketing. Simply put. Hopefully it's half-decent marketing.

That's the sad truth when it comes down to it isn't? It's all about marketing. Also, I'll bet a lot of little girls will buy this movie because it's about Tinkerbell. I can't help but wonder what Walt Disney would have thought of all of this.

Oh, he probably would have loved the idea. I remember back in the day a lot of people said (myself included) "You got rid of traditional animation? What would Walt Disney say?" but in the end, if you look thru the legend of the man, he was a business man that loved progress, so he most likely would have been open to marketing like this as much as ditching traditional animation for 3d (though he most likely would have at least kept a part of the studio rather then eliminate it completly) Disney marketing was well built before he died, so this type of thing goes up Disney's alley. I'm mostly wondering how this works with Peter Pan copyrights, though they have most likely purchased those.

Oh well. Maybe a talking tinkerbell is not so bad, if done right. After all WE can't hear her, but her fellow fairies most likely speak in their bell-language. Consider it a "translation" from fairy to human. Also, we've had a talking fairy before; Julia Roberts in "Hook" and that passed off pretty ok. Who knows? it might be good. They took a really strong voice for her after all; Katara.

(nods) Good point and that makes sense. Actually, that's one of the things I want to do this summer is read up on the actual history of the Disney company and of course Walt Dinesy himself. It's ironic that I'm a huge Disney fan, but I don't know the full story of the man himself. ^_^;

I'll try to save final judement on a talking Tinkerbell until I actually see the movie then. I do like Mae Whiteman (she's very good at her job), I'm just more worried on the story itself and the writing of the dialog. As you said, there's chance that it might turn out to be good.
