I think I found the pattern for my wedding dress. I looked at a local bridal shop yesterday, but the dresses were far too sparkling and glittering for my taste. (I've seen tiaras with less sparkle.) Plus, I want a dress with sleeves and of course NONE of the dresses there had any.

So, since I wanted a dress with sleeves I decided to go it would be easier to have it made. A friend of my mother is a professional seamstress, so finding a person won't be a problem.

I've been looking at sewing patterns for the last few months and I found this one.

wedding dress pattern

We can easily make a couple of alterations, such as to tie a ribbon around the waist, having the top and skirt match and the length of the sleeves. Anyway, I think this pattern is me and the best part is the website is having a sale on the bridal patterns. ^_^ Talk about perfect timing.

*laughs* I think it's part of the reason why I like it. I love the collar on it.

That pattern is gorgeous. I bet you'll look great in it!

Ugh. The sleeve thing. I had a similar problem when I went looking for a prom dress. I wanted to get a dress that I could wear a bra underneath. But ALL of them were either sleeveless or backless or had inappropriately low necklines. I guess that's the style now; but we can't be the only people who still like to have sleeves on our fancy dresses!
In case you're wondering, I eventually borrowed a dress from the school's sewing teacher (her old students left behind some nice stuff!) XD

I had the EXACT same problem when looking for a prom dress. I ended up finding a dress that was high enough in the back for a bra and had spaghetti straps.

I don't like the sleeves/strapless style at all. Frankly, not everyone looks good in that style. After seeing the bridal shop yesterday, I wanted sleeves even more to spite it. XP

LOL. I ended up wanting "spite sleeves", too! I even considered wearing a tuxedo to the prom (I still had a tuxedo left over from my Haruka Tenou/tomboy phase), but my parents and my date vetoed that idea.

My mom said the same thing. I think it has a very classic look to it. ^_^ (Hah! Take that sleeve less dresses! XP)

The best thing about dresses that you either have made specifically for you or you make yourself is that you can customize them any way you want. I remember surfing patterns while I was looking for a wedding dress...and then ended up buying one. ^^;;

I think my biggest issue was finding bridesmaids dresses, as both of my bridesmaids are tall and size stick. (And one of them was only thirteen at the time, so I had to find an age appropriate dress for her.) I ended up going with a pattern reprint from the 1930s that had fully covered backs and higher neckline and sleeves vs. any of the super short, backless, plunging dresses that happened to be in style at that time.

Anyway, I do love that dress. It's classy and elegant and transcends time, which means grand kids won't look at it and go, "Ugh, what are you wearing?!"

Thanks, I just love the classic look to it.

Thankfully, I won't have to worry about bridesmaid dresses. Stu had a hard time picking between his friends and brothers to be his best man, so instead we're going to have his dad and my mom stand up with us and be our witnesses. (They're both single parents, so it's quite fitting.) So, I'm not going to have any bridesmaids, thus I don't have to go hunting for good dresses for them! ^_^

Thank goodness for one less headache!! I got married close enough to Prom that I thought I could just go to the store and pick out suitable dresses off the rack.

I was wrong.

My mother is an awesome seamstress, though, so she was able to make the dresses in only a few weeks.

Also, I love that you're including your parents in such a way.

I like the design of the dress, but I don't like how the top is overly decorative while the bottom is plain. I'd make then match at least, or maybe add a top skirt layer with the decorative fabric just to tie the two together more. Be prepared for a lot of alterations though. Patterns are made with "one size fits most" mindset, so for whoever makes this, it's best to make a shell of the pattern out of cheap cloth (muslin) and then have you try that on to see how it fits, so alterations can be made. I had to take an entire semester on alterations. Rather eye-opening how poorly patterns fit.

I hear you on wedding dresses though. There are actually a lot of LDS-specific bride stores anymore since it's nearly impossible to find a modest dress otherwise. I'm all for having sleeves...

We're planning on having the top match the bottom, it's one of the changes I want to make. Also, we're going to have the dress made by a friend of mom's who sews wedding dresses for a living. Don't worry, I wasn't planning on making the dress myself. ^_~

If anything else, I'm going to have sleeves just to spite all of those sleeveless dresses. It's weird how this has become the latest fashion, especially since a lot of people don't look good in sleeve/strapless dresses. @_@

Oh, I know it, you said as much in your post. I was just giving you an idea on what to expect (and agreeing on changing the look of the dress).

I might have to try one of those LDS shops/websites if I ever get married. Because it doesn't look like the sleeveless/strapless/backless fad is going away anytime soon. :P

Just to give you an idea on how many there are out there's here's a basic Google search. I used to drive past an LDS wedding store all the time when I lived in Idaho, and there are certainly a lot of them in Utah... I just hope they allow for mail order since I don't plan on driving that far when the time comes! ;)

I hear you on the sleeves. I dislike the sleeveless look simply because I don't have the upper arms for it. Granted, I do have some sleeveless tops and dresses that I've worn, but I have had a sweater or a shawl of some sort over it to cover my arms. You can't exactly do that with a wedding dress, however.

The sleeveless look bothers me mainly because I'd constantly worry about the fabric slipping and causing me to inadvertently flash someone.
Once I tried using a strapless bra because I found a sleeveless shirt that looked nice on me. But the damn thing kept slipping down. I don't know how people can wear that stuff! O_o

Yeah, I had an incident with a strapless bra once. I was wearing a top with a square neckline and I had to wear a strapless bra in order to not have my bras show. I was at a wedding and was dancing to "Walking on Sunshine" and I kinda... slipped out of my bra. Luckily my top was intact and did not flash anyone, but I did have to go the the restroom and readjust things a bit.

I think is a lovely dress but I think the changes you have in mind are going to make it look even more wonderful ^^.
